Memories Are Made in the Kitchen

Developed by the multidisciplinary exhibition design team at the Canadian Museum of Foor and Argiculture, Memories Are Made in the Kitchen is a permanent exhibition at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum exploring the kitchen as a space of connection, culture, and transformation. The design invites visitors to reflect on how kitchen environments shape identity and tradition—from the tools we use to the stories we share. Developed with multi-sensory, accessible engagement at its core, the exhibit blends historical artifacts, personal narratives, and interactive elements in a warm, inviting space.

Main Challenges

  • Taking over creative leadership midway through the project, following an earlier design phase that did not meet expectations.

  • Navigating staffing changes and maintaining project continuity under tight timelines.

  • Designing a permanent exhibition that met high standards for physical, visual, and cognitive accessibility.

Key Achievements

  • Successfully redefined the exhibition and graphic design direction, delivering a cohesive, visitor-focused experience.

  • Implemented accessibility features across formats—including tactile, bilingual, and easy-to-read content—setting a benchmark for future exhibits.

  • Led a resilient and collaborative design process that brought the project to completion on time and with strong internal alignment

Responsibilities

  • Took over leadership of exhibition and graphic design midway through development.

  • Collaborated closely with curators, educators, fabricators, and accessibility consultants.

  • Redesigned layout, interpretive elements, and visual identity to meet evolving content needs.

  • Developed production-ready files for all environmental graphics, labels, and signage.

  • Ensured accessibility compliance across visual, tactile, and written content.

  • Coordinated design handoff and fabrication support under a compressed timeline.
